(Milledgeville)
COMMUNITY PROFILE
Milledgevilles 40,000 residents live and work in a thriving community, home
to international companies, as well as many homegrown companies. Fifteen
thousand-acre Lake Sinclair provides recreation and lake living for thousand of
Georgians.
The retail trade draws shoppers from the five surrounding counties, who also
enjoy the area restaurants and sites while they are here. For more information
contact the Milledgeville-Baldwin Co. Chamber of Commerce, (478) 453-9311.
Demographics - Crawford County
COMMUNITY PROFILE
Due to the increasing growth of Crawford County, a new facility for the health
department has been built. New facilities for the Older Americans Council, as
well as the countys Department of Family and Childrens Services, are
additional assets. To promote new business, the county government has converted
an old elementary school into the first rural (incubator) business development
center in the country. A new industrial park, complete with an airport, makes
the county attractive to new industry. With a population base of 9,000, housing
is easily affordable, as the county expands. State and county officials,
churches, social organizations and private citizens are working together to
make Crawford County a model for rural communities in America, maintaining
traditions while welcoming newcomers, industry and progress.
Demographics - Houston County
(Warner Robins, Perry)
COMMUNITY PROFILE
Today the cities of Houston County are booming, thanks in large part to the
aerospace industry which is in place because of Robins Air Force Base, the
largest employer in the area. The Air Force Base employs some 18,000 (14,000 of
whom are civilians). Warner Robins Air Logistics Center, host to more than 40
Tenants at Robins, is the states largest single industrial complex. Its
importance to the area cannot be overstated. But civilian life in Warner Robins
is bustling, also. Houston Mall is the center for shopping in the county, and
the development of a mall in Centerville has expanded shopping opportunities.
So Warner Robins is seen as a vital area serving the mid-state. Centerville,
with a city hall on Houston Lake Boulevard, has a life of its own. The
Agricenter, built primarily to showcase Georgias largest industry,
agriculture-agribusiness, also offers weekend antiques and collectibles shows,
flower shows, dog shows, rodeos and many other crowd-drawing events.
The county combines space-age technology and agriculture with down home
manners and mores, offering the best in cosmopolitan living with a slightly
rural twist.
Demographics - Jones County
COMMUNITY PROFILE
Jones County is ideally situated in the northeastern section of Middle
Georgia, between Macon and Milledgeville. It is just a few miles off Interstate
75 at Forsyth and 80 miles southeast of Atlanta.
Rich in history and natural beauty, Jones County has much to offer visitors
and residents.
Recreation opportunities include the Jones County recreation complex, two
public golf courses, the Jarrell Plantation, the Piedmont National Wildlife
Refuge, and Old Clinton. The Ocmulgee River, other streams and creeks and the
wooded areas of the county offer quiet recreation.
Jones County has an effective school system serving over 4,500 students in
grade pre-K-12.
Demographics - Monroe County
COMMUNITY PROFILE
Whats happening in Monroe County? Plenty. But it wasnt always so. It took
slavery, war, boll weevil, and depression to finally free the community from
total dependence on agriculture. Where the railroad once linked Monroe County
to the outside world, today it is Interstate 75.
Juliette still basks in the afterglow of the movie Fried Green Tomatoes with
The Whistle Stop Café and gift shops.
The Forsythia Festival brings thousand to town each spring. The Georgia
Department of Natural Resources headquarters for the Non-Game Management
program are at Rum Creek Wildlife Management Area.
Demographics - Peach County
COMMUNITY PROFILE
Today, Peach County considers its location one of its greatest assets. Market
access is easily afforded by the ideal location alone Interstate 75 in the
center of the state. The suburban county of 20,000 people offers rural
lifestyles with urban conveniences. Within 30 minutes is a trade area of
330,000 people that provides a vibrant, diverse economy.
Agriculture is the leading industry for the county, earning an estimated $58
million annually for the community. But the economy is diverse: in addition to
the booming peach and pecan industry, manufacturing and education help insure
the economic well being of the county.
Between Fort Valley and nearby Marshallville, Massee Lane Gardens, the home of
the American Camellia Society, is located, with seven acres of flowers in bloom
from November through March.
Demographics - Twiggs County
COMMUNITY PROFILE
Twiggs County is 101 miles southeast of Atlanta, the state capital, and covers
a land area of 363 square miles. In the most recent census, the population in
the town of Jeffersonville was 1,545; in the county it was 9,806.
Jeffersonville, the county seat, like neighboring communities, grew up around
the kaolin plants around the turn of the century. Kaolin has had a significant
impact on the part of Central Georgia; Georgia is the worlds largest producer
of the product.
A part of Georgias modern integrated electrical system, Jeffersonville has
excellent ability to supply industrial demands; natural gas is also available
in industrial quantities. The area is obviously prepared for industry as the 21st
century approaches.
